What is the Anywhere Theatre Festival?
The Anywhere Theatre Festival runs annually in May for twelve jam-packed days.
The next festival will run in Brisbane from 8 – 19 May 2013.
It is the first theatre festival to get around the lack of theatre venues in Brisbane by only allowing productions that don’t use them. Shows can be anywhere – a park, a backyard, a bedroom, an elevator, a street, a train, even on twitter. Anywhere except a ‘traditional’ venue.
What kinds of shows feature in the festival?
When we say theatre, we mean any performance – theatre, opera, musicals, circus, clowning, comedy, drama, poetry, interactive, live art, cabaret, and anything else you can think of that involves performing.
There are interstate and international performances, local independent companies and many more besides performing drama, comedy, dance, musical, circus and clowning.
Where will it be?
The festival is happening anywhere within Brisbane City Limits. There may be some in the Brisbane CBD but the whole idea is to have theatre in other places. Places that are easier for you to get to, that are in YOUR local area, including productions that can come to your home.
How will I know where shows are happening?
The festival programme is launched in late March and distributed throughout Brisbane. You can also come to this website and go straight to a map of Brisbane and performances, or search by the type of show or performance date. There will be directions to each location, information on parking, public transport, eating and drinking options and seating availability.
How much will it cost and where can I get tickets?
The average ticket price is $15 and many events are free. Once the program is launched, tickets will be available online from this website, over the phone or purchased on the door of each event.
** Please note that Anywhere Theatre Festival does not maintain a physical box office- tickets are held at the door of the event ONLY.
Where do I go for the performances and do I need to bring my own chair?
When you purchase a ticket, you will be given a map of the location and a list of surrounding cafes, bars and eateries so you can plan you evening. you will also be told whether the performance is seated, standing or requires you bring your own chair (very rare)
What happens if it rains?
Any outside performance will have contingency plans to ensure rain does not affect the performance, so you can be sure the event will happen.
The important thing to remember is that although there will be no performances inside traditional theatres, many performances will still be happening inside- be it, halls, lobbies, houses, garages, etc.
